Director of Product Design

The Knot Worldwide is seeking a Director of Product Design to accelerate our transition to one of the leading user-centered tech companies in the wedding industry and beyond. This role is new to the company and represents our increasing investment in deep user impact.

We are looking for a design leader who can build delightful and beautiful world-class products, hire and develop one of NYC’s strongest UX and design teams, and improve our organization’s design thinking and execution. The Knot uses modern practices operating in agile, self-directed, performance-oriented squads who are driving outcomes through OKRs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy
    • Partner with product and design leadership on a product vision and strategy that aligns and inspires our whole design/product/engineering organization
    • Build and evangelize design thinking into how we work across design, product, and engineering, and represent design and user experience across the company’s leadership
    • Collaborate with front end engineering on a global pattern library approach that balances speed and creativity  
  • Execution
    • Lead your team of UX, UI, and full stack designers as they work within their squads to solve our and our users’ most important problems
    • Improve how design, product, and engineering work together with your fellow leaders across the three functions
    • Drive an effective design review process
    • Implement a design culture within the product organization and across the organization
  • Hiring and team development
    • Continue growing and upgrading your design team
    • Improve our design hiring brand, e.g. through community representation or thought leadership  
    • Develop your design team into masters of their craft and thought leaders in the product community
    • Additionally, help develop the company’s product managers into stronger design thinkers and partners

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of digital product design and leadership including end-to-end execution, with proven track record from B2B to B2C, shallow to deep, one time to repeated usage, innovation to iteration, and web to app experiences.
  • Demonstrated track record of creating and leading others to create beautiful industry-leading design solutions to important product problems
  • Facility with modern product development processes: agile, lean, iterative, outcome oriented, data driven (A/B testing), user research informed
  • Development orientation - you are eager to grow yourself and your team members
  • Strong presentation and written communication skills
  • Track record collaborating with product management, engineering, and marketing leaders

ABOUT THE ROLE AND OUR TEAM:

The experienced and impassioned Product Manager (you!) will help set the strategic direction of the WeddingWire product strategy and create features that simplify the wedding planning process for couples. You will bring entrepreneurial spirit, creative problem solving and user-centric design thinking to our team to build new products from minimally viable experiments to iterating and scaling existing products. You will work closely alongside engineering, design and other key business partners and report to the VP of Product Management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • By way of thorough research and understanding, define and oversee the strategic direction of our Marketplace products in close collaboration with engineering, design and other key business partners.
  • Passionately drive outcome-focused execution knowing with confidence that what matters most is how the product impacts our customers and our business.
  • Productively collaborate with leaders across the organization, from marketing and sales to finance and operations, to ensure cohesion between your products and the overall product experience.

SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT MANAGER CANDIDATES HAVE:

  • A minimum of five years in product development, specifically within an agile environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with setting strategic direction and helping to ideate and launch new products and experiences.
  • A motivated desire to use quantitative and qualitative data in making product decisions, while having experience with user science tools + methods.
  • Proficiency in utilizing a variety of analytical tools and a proven track record of creating quality consumer experiences that accommodate user needs and business requirements.
  • The ability and mindfulness to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively with team members across all levels of the organization.
  • An exceptional visual intelligence with a “good eye” toward keen aesthetics, strong empathy, and a user-centered mentality.

ABOUT THE ROLE AND OUR TEAM:

We are looking for a full-stack product designer who wants to build products that matter! This means someone who is passionate about partnering with Product Owners and Engineers to set the strategic vision, interaction design direction, and visual design polish and assets that make our products world class.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Be a great product squad partner

  • Work as a partner in an autonomous, full-stack, product team.
  • Work with software development teams to meet technical requirements.
  • Lead design studios to facilitate a shared design process.

Be a great product designer

  • Know and love our users, understand their pain points, listen to their feedback, walk in their shoes, be their champions.
  • Collaborate with our research team.
  • Effectively present to and discuss solutions with stakeholders.
  • Design visually elegant interfaces that are easy to use across platforms.

Be a great design team partner

  • Contribute to a cohesive user experience via the growth of our design system.
  • Participate in design team reviews/critiques.
  • Improve the designers around you as you improve yourself as well.

SUCCESSFUL SENIOR PRODUCT DESIGNER CANDIDATES HAVE:

  • You have 3-6 years of experience as a full-stack user-experience designer.
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Product Design, Interaction Design, or a related field (or equivalent proven field experience).
  • You have a great online portfolio.
  • You have experience defining patterns/style guides, performing user testing, and building low to high fidelity prototypes.
  • You are proficient in Sketch, InVision, Zeplin, usertesting.com. Additional programs (Abstract and Principle) a plus.
  • You understand how software is made and how to collaborate with developers.
  • You have a passion for research and have facilitated user testing and studies/analysis of user feedback and behavior.
  • You process quantitative as well as qualitative data alongside empathy as a driver to distill into innovative, user-centric solutions.
  • You are a strategic design thinker.
  • You are an excellent communicator.

ABOUT THE ROLE AND OUR TEAM:

We are seeking an experienced and impassioned Sr. Product Manager to help us transform wedding planning into a delightful journey while helping couples get the hard work done with confidence. We’re looking for that special someone to ensure that The Knot stays #1 in Weddings by bringing your entrepreneurial spirit, creative problem solving, and user-centric design thinking to our team.

You’ll work closely with exceptional design and tech leads. Your Marketing and PR partners are knowledgeable and collaborative, having built up key relationships in the industry over many years.

We have built a world-class product development team and are passionate about growing product managers into masters of the craft. We have a rich product development program including monthly Product Schools, pair PMing, development budgets, guest speakers, meetups … as well a strong general focus on personal development.

This role is a great mix of forward-thinking strategy and highly creative, design-centered feature development. You should be excited about building new products from Minimally Viable Experiments to iterating and scaling the existing planning products. You love helping users solve big problems and making life’s biggest moments joyful instead of stressful
