Thousands of Moms to Breastfeed in Public Today for The Bump Boobolution

Boobolution Day Empowers Moms to Show the World It’s Their Right to Breastfeed Their Baby Whenever and Wherever Needed

NEW YORK, NY/August 7, 2015 – Today, The Bump, the definitive voice for all things pregnancy and parenting, hosts its fourth annual Boobolution Day empowering moms to breastfeed in public. The Bump Boobolution is a movement of moms to increase awareness and reduce prejudice for the basic right to nurse in public, an action that is also protected by law in 49 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.

Despite the protection under the law and the well-known health benefits of breastfeeding, 25 percent of US women report they’ve experienced criticism or prejudice for nursing in public, according to a study of newly published breastfeeding stats. Additionally, 25 percent of women who breastfed reported to The Bump that they did so for a shorter period of time than planned, and approximately two thirds (66%) of breastfeeding women transitioned to formula within baby’s first year1.  While there are many contributing factors to both stats, fear of public breastfeeding and lack of support have been cited as reasons why moms stop breastfeeding earlier than planned.

More than 4,000 moms have already pledged to join the Boobolution on TheBump.com, and they’re sharing their pledge through social media to raise support and awareness. Exclusively sponsored by Lansinoh, moms are officially pledging on TheBump.com/boobolution, posting their pride on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #boobolution.

“Covered or not, in the park or at a restaurant, a mom should feel comfortable and supported to breastfeed her baby anytime, anywhere,” said Julia Wang, site director of The Bump. “We’re thrilled that so many moms have pledged to breastfeed in public today, and our hope with this campaign is to continue to fight against the shaming and criticism so many moms experience when nursing in public.”

In addition to the Boobolution campaign, The Bump offers expert-driven advice on breastfeeding and access to online events at TheBump.com/breastfeeding, including:
