September: Boom in Weddings

  • The ninth month of the year is the most popular for Italian weddings, with 18.3% of total national weddings taking place in that month. With the drop in temperature and the evolving styles of couples, many are electing this month to say “I do”.
  • Just like Chiara Ferragni and Fedez’s wedding, Italian weddings are getting more and more social. According to a survey by Matrimonio.com, more than half of couples use Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp to share the excitement of their big day.

Milan, August 28, 2018 – September is just around the corner, and summer vacation is over: it’s time to get back to the old routine. But the ninth month of the year is not just that, for many it means a new start. Perhaps for this reason, for a few years now, the month that marks the start of fall is also the most popular for weddings, with a percentage that reaches 18.3% in Italy of total weddings celebrated throughout the year.

According to a survey carried out by Matrimonio.com, leading wedding website, the most popular dates to say “I do” are those with milder weather. Up until a couple of years ago, brides used to favor June and July, but today’s newlyweds prefer September. It’s no accident then that even the famous fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni and singer Fedez, have picked September 1st for their wedding day. The most awaited and talked about wedding will take place in Noto (Syracuse), where the couple will host a true Coachella-style festival, with music, flowers and fashion stars.

The evolution of today’s couples demands a change in the wedding sector: new millennial couples, the generation born between the beginning of the 80s up to the year 2000, want a less formal wedding, more authentic and original, they want to make their own decisions, not have their parents decide. According to the “Libro Bianco del Matrimonio” (“Wedding White Paper”) data, published by Matrimonio.com, in collaboration with ESADE Business School and Google, in just 1% of the cases parents or in-laws are the ones making the decisions. It’s obvious that today’s newlyweds are more mature and have clearer ideas: they invite their friends rather than their parents’ friends, which causes the lowering of the average age of the guests. They also take advantage of the summer months to celebrate their bachelorette and bachelor parties in exotic locations, while completing the final preparations for the big day, keeping a close eye on social media.

Weddings in the time of Instagram

According to the “Libro Bianco del Matrimonio” data, today’s weddings are more social than ever: half of all couples use social media to research and to share their excitement. The survey shows that 73% of newlyweds shared snapshots of their big day on social networks, with some specific preferences, like Facebook (67%) and Instagram (32%). And for those who care about their privacy and want to have total control on the content they publish, Matrimonio.com offers WedShoots, an IPhone and Android app that lets you share and comment instantaneously on the photos shot on your big day. With WedShoots, the photos get automatically added to the online wedding album and shared with all the guests with an easy to use QR code provided by the bride and groom.

There’s no doubt, when it comes to picking the right moment to say “I do”, late spring, early summer, and now September are among couples’ favorite months.
