According to Bodas.net and three of its expert bakeries, fruit flavors, single-tier designs, and unconventional silhouettes are becoming the favorite choices for Spanish couples
Once a traditional wedding staple, the wedding cake has evolved into one of the most creative and personalised elements of the modern celebration. Today's couples are moving beyond convention, using the dessert occasion at their wedding as a way to express their personality, entertain guests, and create memorable shared moments.
According to the 2026 Wedding Sector Report, Spain's leading wedding planning platform, weddings are increasingly being shaped by Millennial and Gen Z couples. More than 70% of couples planning weddings today are Millennials, while a further 23% belong to Gen Z.
This generational shift is influencing every aspect of wedding planning. Eight in ten couples say ensuring guests have a great experience is their top priority, while food and drink (73%) and personalisation (69%) are also among the most important considerations.
Against this backdrop, Bodas.net and three wedding cake vendors on their platform - Bocaditos Dulces, Urb & Cakes and Dulces Mágicos de Patricia, - decided to explore how wedding cakes and desserts are being impacted by overall wedding trends.
The Rise of Statement Cakes
According to Bodas.net’s three vendors, modern wedding cake designs are evolving, with couples increasingly embracing bold silhouettes and contemporary formats that create visual impact.There are three styles that are particularly popular right now:
Long Cakes and Vintage Romance
Inspired by the growing "coquette" aesthetic, vintage-style cakes decorated with intricate piping and romantic detailing continue to gain popularity. This trend is increasingly being paired with the rise of the Long Cake – an elongated cake design that moves away from the traditional stacked format.
Italian-Inspired Cakes
Simple, elegant, and designed to share, Italian-style wedding cakes have become one of the year's standout trends. Typically featuring a single tier and fresh fruit decoration, these cakes offer a relaxed Mediterranean aesthetic while showcasing lighter, fruit-led flavours.
Rustic Elegance
Semi-naked cakes decorated with fresh flowers, pressed blooms, or seasonal berries remain a timeless choice, particularly for countryside, outdoor and destination weddings.
From Cake Cutting to Live Entertainment
As the guest experience continues to be prioritized the traditional cake-cutting moment is being reimagined.
What was once a brief photo opportunity has evolved into an interactive part of the celebration, designed to engage guests and create a memorable atmosphere.
According to Dulces Mágicos de Patricia, one of the fastest-growing trends involves couples adding the final decorative touches to their cake in front of guests, often accompanied by music and entertainment.
"We're seeing more couples complete the decoration of their cake live during the reception, adding fresh fruit and finishing details in front of their guests”, explains Cristina Benyon, baker and co-founder of Dulces Mágicos de Patricia.
At the same time, practical alternatives such as dessert stations, cupcake displays, and individual dessert servings are becoming increasingly popular, allowing guests to enjoy a wider variety of sweet treats while still maintaining the symbolic cake-cutting tradition.
A Cake That Tells a Story
Today's couples are looking for far more than a beautiful dessert.
Rather than choosing from a catalogue of standard designs and flavours, many couples now view their wedding cake as an extension of their personality and relationship story. From subtle personal details to elaborate themed creations, customisation has become an essential part of the design process.
"Every couple is completely different," explains Oliver Laguillo, cake designer and owner of Urb & Cakes. "We create everything from elegant rustic designs to cakes inspired by films and fantasy worlds such as The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. One of our most memorable creations combined delicate floral decoration with a rally car theme to reflect the couple's individual passions."
Fresh Flavours Lead the Way
Just as wedding cake designs are becoming more creative, flavour choices are also evolving.
While traditional options such as chocolate, cream, and pastry fillings remain familiar favourites, couples are increasingly seeking lighter, more contemporary flavour profiles that complement the overall dining experience.
Bodas’ vendors point to fruit-forward combinations as one of the strongest trends of the year, with citrus fruits, berries, and mascarpone proving especially popular. Meanwhile, flavours such as pistachio and Lotus Biscoff continue to gain momentum among couples looking for something a little more distinctive.
"Classic vanilla and chocolate flavours will always have their place, but couples increasingly want something fresher, lighter, and more memorable for their guests.", explains Elena Díez, baker and founder of Bocaditos Dulces.
